Bait Boats: Are They Worth the Investment?
A premium bait boat will set you back the price of a small car. Here's an honest look at when they're a game-changer — and when they're a waste of money.
Where they shine
If you fish big waters, weedy lakes, or have a physical limitation that makes spodding difficult, a bait boat is genuinely transformational. Pinpoint accuracy at 200m+, the ability to drop a rig into a hole in the weed without disturbing it, and the option to scout features with onboard sonar — these are real advantages.
Where they don't
On smaller waters under 80m, a Spomb and a decent throwing arm will do the job just as well, much faster, and at a fraction of the cost. If you're fishing 50m out, a £700 bait boat is overkill.
The hidden costs
Batteries don't last forever, motors burn out, and lost boats happen. Factor in £200-£400 a year in running costs over the boat's lifespan.
Verdict: a brilliant tool in the right context, but not a magic wand. Buy one because it suits the waters you fish, not because everyone else has one.
