Stalking Margins: A Guide to Mobile Carp Fishing
Forget the bivvy and the four-rod pod. Sometimes the most productive carp fishing is done with a single rod and a bucket of bait, walking the bank.
Travel light
The whole point of stalking is mobility. A single 10ft or 12ft rod, a small reel, a landing net, an unhooking mat, and a bucket with a few hookbaits and some bait. That's it. If you can't carry it in one trip, you've packed too much.
Look before you fish
Spend the first half hour with polarised glasses, walking quietly. Look for clouded water, bubbling, or fish on the surface. A carp you've seen is worth ten you're hoping for.
Bait subtly
A small handful of crumbed boilie or a few grains of corn is plenty. The aim isn't to feed them up — it's to give them a reason to drop their guard for one bite.
Strike fast
Margin takes are violent. Have the rod in your hand or pointed straight at the bait, locked up. The fish will try to bury you in the lily pads given half a chance.
Some of the best fishing of your life will come from sessions like this. Try it.
